At Erw Wastad Livery Services we offer a helpful, friendly livery service with the facilities to care for the psychological and physical needs of a variety of equines.

About Erw Wastad Livery Services

Erw Wastad Livery is run by knowledgeable and experienced horse people, Claire Hargrave and Jenni Nellist, who are also both qualified animal behaviour counsellors. Claire lives on site and Jenni is the yard manager. Jenni oversees the care of your horse. A horse owner herself, she graduated in Equine Science  from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, in 1999. She then worked as groom and then head groom for one of Britain’s leading animal charities. During this time Jenni was responsible for looking after a variety of horses and ponies, many of which had special needs e.g. were laminitic or had other physical or behavioural problems. Jenni has also worked in stud, riding school and competition yards. Today Erw Wastad Livery Services can draw on a wealth of experience to provide you with a high quality livery service for your horse.

Where horses can be horses

The new animal welfare legislation requires that owners provide a suitable environment, suitable diet, the freedom to behave normally, to be housed with/without other animals as applicable, and to be protected from pain, injury, suffering and disease.

Horses are social animals who need to live within a mutually compatible herd. No horse lives in isolation at Erw Wastad.

They also need to maintain their own personal space. And their accommodation should include areas of dry standing, sheltered, shady and sunny spots. And places to defecate/urinate, roll and lie down. Horses also need a good view of their surroundings. At Erw Wastad we have a large area of traditional Welsh pasture for the horses to roam during the drier months. Over the wetter winter we provide large, open barns and yarded areas. We only use stables for horses whose vet has recommended box rest as part of their treatment plan.

Horses evolved to spend around 16 hours a day eating fibre. We feed ad lib haylage, provide mineral licks and have regularly cleaned, automatic water troughs. We can accommodate horses on special diets too.

We protect horses from physical suffering by monitoring their health on a twice-daily basis. We don’t overcrowd horses and take care to introduce new comers carefully and sympathetically. We also accommodate the needs of horses with respiratory problems, laminitis/obesity issues and musculoskeletal problems.

Happy owners

We also endeavour to look after the needs of our owners. We know how much time horse people like to spend with their animals so we’ve provided kitchen, shower, changing and bathroom facilities for your comfort. We also have secure dog kennels and runs so that if you wish to bring your dog with you, there is a comfortable place for him/her to rest while you ride. We hold monthly owners forums so that we can all get together and air any views and plan horsey activities for you to enjoy here.
